Are Career Counseling and College Admission Guidance worth the cost?
Are you having two thoughts regarding your career choice? It is normal to have second thoughts after making up your mind about your future academic course. Having not taken any big decision till a particular age and then suddenly asked to decide the stream of your life, it is quite natural to feel the pressure and uncertainty. Parents do not realize it, but career counseling and guidance can prove path-breaking for your child. It is also pivotal in lifting some of the burden off parents’ chests.
Are Admission Guidance and Career Counseling even needed?
Counseling is a perpetual process. It starts with helping an individual listen to his true calling and continues irrespective of time period because the challenges are never ending. It starts in its most initial form when a student stands at a crossroads and wonders about-
- What to do after high school?
- Which stream to study?
- What college best caters to my academic needs?
- Should I get an education loan?
- Am I moving in the right direction?
Too many questions, very vague answers!
At such a stagnant juncture, the role of counselor or admission guide finds its true utility. Being a third party to the situation, a counselor can help the student with objectivity and a neutral perspective. Let us see how career counseling and college admission guide can help the students and parents-
Wipe out the unnecessary tension
Students these days are aware and their parents even more vigilant of opportunities that stand at the end of an academic course. However, the perspectives can clash and create unwanted tension. What parents can see might be totally foreign to the students and vice versa. The farsightedness might come across as shrewdness and create a rift. A counselor can provide the students with the real and bigger picture in such a scenario. The objectivity of a counselor can provide you unbiased insights, expertise and information to make the right decision.
Make you aware of your core strengths
Counselors are using various psychometric tests these days to back their judgment. These tests can actually bring out the strengths and weaknesses of the students at the forefront. By engaging with the students at multiple levels, a counselor works on identifying his vital areas and suggesting a career path that utilizes those strengths most fittingly.
Clear confusions regarding the admission process
Admission consulting is an effective tool for managing the stressful admission process. The admission process can be daunting and toll-taking for both students and parents. Proper counseling can ease the process by equipping students with confidence and parents with information, guidance and support. The dinner table discussion need not be about conflicting views on college search and the admission process. While an admission counselor takes care of the admission process, parents can have easier conversations with their children.
Help you develop the right strategies
Admission guides and Career Counselors not only clear the haze for you but also guide you by devising the right strategy to approach your goals. Choosing the right college, submitting the college applications timely, and meeting all the requisites can be taxing for the parents owing to their limited knowledge of the domain. Admission and career counselors can timeline all important events and help you approach them strategically without any hassle or haste.
Is Admission and Career Counseling worth the cost?
Yes! Every Penny!
If you think counseling is a pricey affair, it’s the right price to pay for all the benefits it brings along. The cost of counseling depends on where you live and the extent of guidance you require. The admission consultations can be availed on an hourly basis too. That way, you only pay for the time and services you have availed.
Think of it as a cost you pay to avoid unfavorable choices and bad decisions. Taking the expert’s help can prevent you from choosing the wrong college and ultimately from overspending or drowning in huge education loans.
Admission consultation and career counseling are effective aids for the parents to plan their finances. It aims at getting you through a tacky admission process debt free. The counselors’ expertise can help keep the debt down and save the parents from massive financial burden.
The expertise, knowledge and understanding they bring chalk out a perfect road for students to get their dream colleges and for parents to support their kins in every possible manner. With that on the plate, consultants are worth every penny you pay!

At a tender age during college, it is essential to have the opportunity to get guidance that can help you make important decisions. The proper counseling and career guidance may not be available to every student, making it hard for them to find a career that will get them ahead.
The student will be unable to learn all the different career options available to them based on their interests without receiving the right career guidance while in school. Sometimes students feel like they only have one or two options and get discouraged if they don’t like any of them.
Lack of funds
Having a lack of funds is a critical problem major students go through. In the event that they choose a career without adequate financial stability, they may have to compromise on their career goals.
When students enroll or register for any type of college, they will be faced with a lot of expenses, and those expenses may add up over the four years or more they are in school.
In such situations, students can go for scholarship programs which may be helpful in cutting down the cost of education. Although, not all students can get scholarships that make them do a job.
Therefore, financial pressure is also problematic for students because they might not be able to talk openly, which carries a burden for the whole of their life!
Managing peer pressure
In particular, peer pressure is suffocating for students. Families, relatives, and people around them constantly compare and pressure them, which can lead them to make wrong decisions in life if they cannot handle the pressure.
Career guidance after 12th grade helps them a lot in dealing with such situations because they get aware with information about all the career options they have available to them. As a consequence, they gain a deeper understanding of the subjects and can overcome peer pressure, allowing them to make informed decisions.
Parental Pressure
Very few children have the liberty to choose the career of their interest. Often parents like to take the reins of career decisions into their hands which may or may not be the choice of interest of their children, but they cannot take a stand to speak up.
There are times when parents are unaware of the new and emerging careers. Most of them emphasize opting for a career in engineering, medicine, or MBA. In any case, it is essential to help parents understand what career is best for their child and to resolve any conflicts they may have.
Arising Confusion
It is natural for students to want to pursue a career of their interest after they complete schooling, which is why they always look for the best career guidance after 12th grade.
Most of them jump on the internet and frequently search for information on the same; thus, there seems to be too much information to choose from, so they become confused about what to choose.
Good career counseling is the best option to save them!
Reaching out to their core interests and putting forth suitable options is what the counselors can do best.
Imitate the Career
Upon asking many students, they say they decided on a particular career line because their friends were doing the same!
Isn’t it unfair? Because this shows their lack of confidence in themselves!
Lack of awareness and knowledge about expansive career options is the primary reason to cause such misinformed decisions being made by students.
The success of the careers they copycat depends upon their luck and self-belief, but the adverse effect of the same leads to depression and low spirits.
This leads us to the next problem that students face.
The fear of failing
We can either build or destroy ourselves during our college days!
College days are crucial as we step into a whole new world. It is easy to get nervous and be a bit scared of failing. At this point, having a sane mindset is of utmost importance!
To achieve success, students must overcome fears of failure and low self-esteem, which are barriers to their success.
“Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.” ― W.B. Yeats.
Now the biggest question that arises is how to light the fire of passion in students.
The ideal solution for the best career guidance after 12th is to give students effective career counseling. This will lead them not to hasten any career choice!
Career counseling is a wise investment, not a waste of money!
Choose the happiness of your children and save them from facing all the troubles they are likely to encounter without guidance.

A Common Entrance Exam for Undergraduate College Admission – Two Steps Forward, One Step Back?
Have you just completed your 12th grade and now looking forward to getting admission to top-class colleges?
This article is a must for you!
Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today. – Malcolm X
The future can only be brightened by igniting your passion now!
Every year students, after passing their 12th grade, look for college admission in India.
Year after year, between June and August, there is a herd of faces full of anxiety and fear of appearing in the entrance exam to get admission to college.
In India, it is the ‘season of admissions.’ It is the time of the fruition of all their hard work and aspirations.
What are the challenges associated with college admissions in India?
Getting college admissions in India is as challenging and equivalent to getting school admissions in India.
Parents have wanted their children to be admitted to one of the country’s top colleges for ages. But it is not that easy!
It takes a lot of hard work, dedication, and effort to score well on board exams. Not only that but to ace the exams, taking up coaching classes is another hustle altogether.
To state a fact, despite putting in all their efforts, the result is not in their hands because many external factors affect their chances of admission.
Apart from luck,
- The inflation of marks
- Discrepancies in the marking pattern of different boards
- Different colleges have different eligibility requirements
- Various entrance exams
These are some unforeseeable factors that affect their admission to colleges!
University Grants Commission’s announcement in 2022
Considering the current scenario and to make everything equally balanced, University Grants Commission (UGC) made an announcement in March 2022 that from this year onwards, all undergraduate admission into Central Universities across the country will be made through a standard entrance test – Common University Entrance Test or CUET.
What Was the Need for CUET?
With CUET implemented, students have benefitted in many ways, as discussed above, regarding external factors.
- Reduction in reliance on board scores
India has various school curricula and boards. For instance, there are CBSE, ICSE, and HSC academies. Additionally, there are international schools following international curricula, like Cambridge or IB. Each of the educational institutions is governed by a different board; hence, there is a difference in curriculum and marking schemes.
In addition to this, students from different boards won’t be given priority for admission to the university over those from the same boards, making it difficult for them to get accepted.
- Shifted focus from academics only!
College admissions in India and career paths are primarily determined by the score of academics, and that has been the case for the longest time. From the scores of boards to the scores of entrance exams, the abilities of students are determined by the number of marks they have attained.
As a result of the implementation of CUET, immediate problems, such as high cut-offs, variable marking systems, etc., are likely to be resolved more quickly.
- Getting rid of 100% cut-offs
CUET may be a solution to getting rid of 100% cut-offs. Delhi University, MS University, and many more have shown incredibly high cut-off scores for many years. Does this mean students with 95% or more marks are reportedly ineligible to study at the top universities in India?
And we cannot help but wonder, what about students from different state boards who are toppers there yet not granted admission to universities affiliated with different boards!!!
The only hope could be CUET making informed decisions in favor of the students.
Ambiguities in CUET
The CUET is definitely a step in the right direction to support students in further education. Nevertheless, the current UGC guidelines leave too many loopholes and are too ambiguous.
What are the ambiguities?
- It is mandatory for all Central Universities offering undergraduate and integrated-post graduate degrees to follow CUET marks for college admission. In spite of this, colleges can add additional eligibility criteria beyond CUET scores at their discretion, which means there is a disparity between college admission processes within different schools.
- However, CUET is mandatory for all Central Universities; there is still an option for state and private universities to follow CUET scores for college admission. As a result, students will have to apply for those universities separately and take multiple exams, which means students continue to hassle!
Contrary to why it has been executed, CUET isn’t the common entrance test as common as it is stated to be!
A lack of centralized counselling
We are very well aware that CUET is not the first attempt at centralizing college admission for undergraduate degrees. Prior to CUET, JEE and NEET exams were brought into effect for admission into engineering and medical colleges.
CUET’s major difference from JEE and NEET is that JEE and NEET offer a centralized counselling process to allot seats based on students’ scores, while CUET does not.
For a fact, It is up to each university to decide if they want to adopt CUET, so students may have to apply to any university they choose.
Miles to go for CUET
CUET is a brand-new program; therefore, to have various ambiguities and loopholes can be given a pass!
But to state an actual fact, it will be helpful for students to shift away from ‘only marks’ to a ‘holistic profile.’
Save yourself from the hassle of going into exams blindly. Take proper guidance and make informed decisions.

Best Approach to Guide Students: Expert Guidance from Career Counsellor
In today’s fiercely competitive scenario, choosing the right career is very critical and equally difficult as well. And what makes the matter even worse is the availability of multiple options and friendly suggestions as well as the mindset of parents. So, in the present scenario, it requires professional guidance and advisory – for an individual or a student to pursue the right career.
Career counselling is most successful when the counsellor forms a meaningful connection with their Students. They work to understand their student’s interests, aptitude, family background, overall personality and weakness on a level that is much deeper than what any test might reveal. By establishing a therapeutic relationship with their clients, good career counsellors can provide fuller support and guidance to their students.
Career guidance and student counselling are extremely broad and comprehensive concept. The guidance regarding one’s career and the counselling of students involves a conversation between a career counsellor; who should be an expert in his field, he should possess all the skills, abilities, knowledge and updated information regarding the current scenario of the education sector, prospects and opportunities that are available and possess the ability to effectively communicate with the person who is seeking counselling and guidance.
Best Approach to Guide Students
- The Student has to be made aware of their basic personal prerequisites, abilities, and potentialities; hence they have to be made aware of their own positive points and negative points.
- Effective, meaningful and significant information has to be provided to them in a solution to their problems.
- The students should learn how to scrutinize their weaknesses and then overcoming them; the role of the counsellor and a guide is to help them how to catch the fish on their own and not catching the fish by themselves and giving it to them.
- While counselling and guidance students regarding the selection of a career; a counsellor should assist them in making appropriate, satisfying and interesting educational choices.
- Counsellor should make sure to meet the parents to understand the child better. It also helps parents to understand the needs and problems of the students.
- Counsellor should guide the student to identify their flaws and inconsistencies in the field of education and improve upon their learning. They should be guided in a manner to promote effectiveness.
- It is essential to promote amongst the students a sense of awareness, ability to acquire sufficient knowledge regarding their studies. While studying they should put complete focus, and become more capable and intelligent.
A good career counsellor can make the perfect roadmap for students by following few steps of the counselling process, starting with:
- One one session with the student to understand him better.
- Conduct assessment tests fit for the students like Stream Selector Test, Ideal Career Test, Branch Selector Test, depending on students requirements to understand their overall personality, interest, Aptitude etc. Once the results of the assessment are out, it gives clarity to the students, and the career counsellor can offer expert guidance accordingly.
- Giving the right career choice. The next step in career counselling is to provide the right career choices to the students based on their personality assessment.
- Advising on various entrance examinations related to the course choice.
- Understanding the student profile over multiple interactions and giving them the unbiased decision that puts the students in a better position to make life-changing decisions.
CASE STUDY:
One of the students approached me and he was totally in a state of depression due to his parents’ pressure to become an Engineer and join IIT. He tried and appeared for competitive exams with multiple attempts, but failed to succeed as he was not at all interested and fit for the same. He felt devasted and was in a bizarre mental situation. He could not look into anyone’s eyes and would talk with low confidence rather no confidence at all. For him, it was like no future at all. I asked him to visit my office and for the next few days, he used to come and spend some time discussing himself. I used to talk in a friendly manner and try to understand him. He spoke about his strength, weakness, likes, dislikes, interest etc, and within a few days, he started feeling a bit confident. I could see a change in his attitude.
Later I met his parents, discussed with them and made them understand that he is not fit for engineering and told them about various other career options for him.
After working on his profile and according to his overall personality, I suggested a course in Marketing and Event Management and today he is running his own event management company and also doing marketing activities for various companies and is very successful in his career.
This is how I counselled a student and helped him achieve his dreams.
